This year we decided to take part in a community garden. We plowed, we planted, we weeded, we waited. Then things grew. Mostly weeds and grass - more work. The tomatoes look sickly, the onions are stunted, the cabbage is dying. But the herbs... they are thriving! Mostly basil. In fact, more basil than I know what to do with. So, I made pesto. Lots of pesto. Three different basils, three different pestos. Yum!

This is my select for painting with light. I LOVE this technique! So much fun, and not serious. I chose this one because I thought that the light was the most successful, even though the focus seems a bit soft...I think it's because of the use of flashlight instead of flash on several parts. My exposure was ISO100, F/8, and 181 seconds.

Flashlight, Flash and colored gels light up the stairs on the Devil's Ice Box trail at Rock Bridge Park in Columbia at 10:30 pm.

Blending assignment - Drag Show

Ms. Alexis Principal dances at the second annual Drag Show at Jesse Auditorium in Columbia, MO on Saturday, April 5. My exposure was set at ISO 100, f/10, 1/3 and I used my flash directly at full power.

This was such a fun event to photograph...everybody had such high energy! I enjoyed the blending technique very much. The results are great....When you can get it to work! There were more that didn't work than did. I kept pointing my flash in the wrong place because I was trying to focus and follow the entertainers while they were dancing... Goodness!

This picture was taken at ISO 200, f/6.3, 1/250. I overexposed the outside (through the window) and bounced a flash off of the ceiling to light up Amelia. I found out that babies are difficult to focus on when you are using a shallow DoF. They keep moving. Silly babies.

Amelia Rysavy, 27 months, plays with her uncle while waving at her dad. Amelia was born with Down Syndrome and is rather small for her age, but keeps up with the best when it comes to play-time.

Matt and I went to Denver to visit his brother's family - Jason, Jenni and Amelia. Amelia is just a few weeks shy of two years in these pictures. The dog's name is Liala... she's a laberdoodle. It's fun to say laberdoodle. You should try it.

color correction

These photographs were taken under florescent lighting with a green gel over the flash. They were then color corrected in photoshop. I had difficulties getting proper exposure at the dog shop - the room was very small, and the walls were green and blue, which made it difficult to bounce the flash or use it directly.

Dogs wait patiently while Noni Ruff, Whitney Slater and Jeanette Porter (left to right) goom their fur at All Dogs -N- Cats. Owned by Jeanette and Phillip Porter, All Dogs -N- Cats, located at 805 Nifong Blvd. in Columbia, provides professional grooming and pet boarding facilities. On an average day, about 35-40 animals get groomed - their busiest day can bring up to 60.

A dog waits for a groomer at All Dogs -N- Cats. Owners can buy toys and treats in the stylish front room while waiting for their pet to look fabulous.

This assignment sucked... and the pictures show it. Using the flash is a mystery to me - thinking math while trying not to drop the camera or the flash and focusing, is apparently not a talent of mine. And, needless to say, strangers don't seem to like having a bright light flash in their eyes. I hoping for better results next time. Don't you wish that the flash could be invisible to your subject? I should start working on that... I could be a bazillionaire!
